Cause of death = heart failure? Our medical examiner is very careful not to mention *why* the heart failed in the first place. If the beheading had been an accident they would likely have listed the cause of death as decapitation. How squeamish and hypocritical to use the death penalty and yet be afraid to boldly state it in official documents. Bah!

| It is the Swedish Berger. used once in 1910. They take it out of storage from time to time for an exhibit. This is such an exhibit. Note the special safety brackets connecting the blade to the cross brace so there is no chance of dropping the blade.
This is a 100% real Berger model!

| I'm starting to get an idea of most of the guillotines out there, but I'm far from an expert on the subject. I recognized this one because I have 20 pictures of it, including the one you showed... too easy.
I am still interested in seeing a picture of the "Guadeloupe guillotine" stored with the Red one from Reunion in the basement of the Musee des Prisons at Fontainebleau. I don't know if it is an older model or a Berger... Obrecht went to Martinique twice in the 1960's to execute murderers but I don't know if he brought the French machine with him or used a "local" machine, which could well be the one at the Musee des Prisons (Martinique and Guadeloupe are neighboring islands)
There are also two guillotines that were returned to France when the Bagne in Guyanna closed. I do not know where they are. The one currently displayed in Guyanna is from the Civil Prison in Cayenne and was never used.
There is also the mystery around Meyssonnier's machines. He has three as far as I can tell from a video interview with him. He does not say but there are parts from three Berger type guillotines in his museum which you can see during the interview. All three appear old, so I am not sure that they are copies as some have claimed. They look VERY authentic.
Where did he get them? Another mystery...

| A propos guillotine from Martinique(in XIX century) 1. "On 24 August 1889, the guillotine was used for the first and last time in Northern America. A named Néel was sentenced to death for a murder. There was no guillotine on the islands and one had to be shipped from Martinique; the guillotine arrived in a very bad state and could hardly work. There was no official executor and the gendarme appointed for the execution had to leave the islands because everybody called him Judas and refused his money. A young doctor attended the execution; he had landed on Saint-Pierre in 1887 as a microbiologist and understood the alteration of the colour of codfish caused by a bacterium living in salt. The doctor was named Albert Calmette and invented years later with the veterinarian Camille Guérin the vaccine against tuberculosis known as BCG." 2. The only time the guillotine was ever used in North America was in Saint-Pierre in the late 1800s. Joseph Néel was convicted of killing a Mr. Coupard on the "île aux Chiens" on December 30, 1888, and executed by guillotine on August 24, 1889. The guillotine had to be shipped from Martinique and it did not arrive in working order. It was very difficult to get anyone to perform the execution; finally a recent immigrant was coaxed into doing the job. This event was the inspiration for the film, "The Widow of Saint-Pierre" ("La Veuve de Saint-Pierre") released in the year 2000. The guillotine is now in a museum in Saint-Pierre. | |
