Excellent pictures of the Berger from the Bagne... Put together a little helter skelter apparently by the photographer but it actually looks in very good condition. He appears to be missing the steel support braces and cross bar and he put the rear leg of the bascule in backwards. Great find!

As far as I know there were only two widows in French Guyana: An old 1793 model used on Ile Royale and the new Berger model used in St Laurent. Thus the pictures are THE Berger guillotine from St Laurent, which claimed over 300 heads from the 1890's through 1946. Any idea where it is now? The pictures look like it was taken out of storage especially for these photos. The basket is even photographed inside its storage crate. This may explain why the braces are not installed... they are probably in the bottom of one of the boxes.

I hope this piece of history is in a museum not rotting away in a shed somewhere!
